The Afghani Bassmasters
A Tribute to our Canadian Military Bassmasters Serving Overseas

Petawawa Ontario: Site of a Canadian Military Base since 1905. It is also the site of one of the Ontario BASS Federations most active clubs – the Petawawa Bassmasters. What makes these men unique among most other Canadian Bassmasters? They are all members of our Canadian Military and they frequently find themselves sacrificing all the things in life that we hold so dear (like leaving family and bass fishing behind for six months) to serve our great country overseas.

The Evening Before

Toyota Texas Bass Classic
April 13-15/07

Pre Tournament Coverage | The Evening Before | Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3

April 12th, 2007

Well the big Toyota Texas Bass Classic is almost here and competing anglers are making last minute tackle adjustments and re-spooling their lines for one of the most unique fishing tournaments they have ever fished. Many have the feeling that this event could very well offer a whole new dimension to the sport of competitive bass angling.

Today, I heard from Dave Mercer, who as we have already reported, will co-MC the big event in Texas along with Fish Fishburne. Dave   remarked that the tournament hype down there rivals that of the Bassmasters Classic; the biggest bass tournament on the planet. “As soon as you drive out of the DallasAirport, you begin seeing billboards advertising this thing – and everywhere you go in town, the people are talking about it and they can hardly wait for it to get started.” Dave told me. He too is very excited about this event and is having a great time. Instead of tying him up on the phone for too long with more details, he was quite willing to share his blog with us – so thanks Dave and we look forward to hearing more from Texas as the event unfolds.

“Well, I finally got to Texas and I gotta tell you, its true what they say. Everything is bigger in Texas! Even though I have been involved with the Toyota Texas Bass Classic for quite some time and have heard the set up they were going to have down here, I have to be honest - when I arrived I was totally blown away! This is truly the greatest outdoor tournament setup I have ever seen!

The best vantage point to watch this event is definitely the VIP Hospitality Suites which are a full-on, tricked-out, fully stocked VIP box seat. Just like you would see at any major sporting event. That's right - box seats at a fishing tournament! Its hard to believe, but like I said, everything is bigger in Texas!

One of the things that has blown me away from the very second I arrived here, is how well the angler teams are gelling at this early stage in the tournament. I have spent a few hours yesterday hanging out in the lunker club, which is basically a sanctioned-off angler VIP area, and it seemed like every corner of the room had a different team of anglers meeting and going over maps.

Speaking of maps and Lake Fork, you know it wouldn't be me if I didn't try to sneak out and go fishing. After all my meetings were done, I did get a few hours on the water with Kelly Jordan, and all I can say is WOW!!! Lake Fork really is one of the greatest bass fisheries in the world! There are going to be some crazy big bags of bass weighed in this weekend!”

“WOW! Sometimes I think I should pinch myself to check if I am dreaming. Emceeing an event like the Toyota Texas Bass Classic really is a dream come true for me. Not only does it give me a chance to start emceeing some events in the U.S., but it gives me a chance to work with one of my heroes when I was growing up, Fish Fishburne. I can only imagine how much fun we are going to have this weekend!

Me and Fish are staying together in the same house, down here in Lake Fork and I gotta tell ya - there are lots of laughs in that house! The only thing that house is short of is sleep! We stayed up until 1:00 am last night, joking and telling stories. Then it was an early wakeup call this morning at 5:00 am so we could get over to send the anglers out for the corporate pro/am. The anglers will be in from that event at 12:15pm and I can't wait to see some of the weights that they bring in.

Talking to everyone at last night's Toyota VIP Party, I was blown away by all the big fish stories such as two fish over 13 lbs., multiple 10-pounders and even Terry Scroggins has a picture of three fish on one crankbait! Not just any three fish; an 11-pounder, a 6-pounder and a 4-pounder! That's right, 21 lbs. of fish in one cast. I really believe this event is going to change the way tournaments are run in the future. It's hard to believe and explain how big this event is. I can't wait to get home next week and post some of the pictures I've taken so you guys can see what I am seeing.

Finally, last night as I shared drinks and dinner with people like Kevin VanDam,  Denny Brauer, Gary Klein, and many others I couldn't help but think how cool life is and don't let anyone ever tell you can't accomplish your dreams!”

Of course all Canadian bass anglers who are closely watching this event have their eyes focused on the sole Canadian competitor – professional angler Jon Bondy of Windsor Ontario. Jon has been earnestly pre fishing since Tuesday and all that on-the-water work is beginning to pay off.  In an exclusive interview with Jon, we are able to share his overall comments before the actual competition begins.

“Wil … We've been fishing hard! Out of the four of us, we decided that one of us should spend our practice off shore looking for a deep mother lode that everyone would miss. I was that guy, as they all like shallow fishing. I fished hard in deep water for a day and a half, and the biggest I've caught is 5 lbs on a brush hawg. I went shallow this afternoon and found some good ones, up to 8 lbs. They were real skittish and would run from a wacky rig senko...but there is one bait they will hit hard. And I'm not gonna say what it is just yet. My partners have been doing well in the shallows with it, and are real excited about doing good, not just average...

I will be fishing with Denny on day one. This event is gigantic, and Dave did a great job tonight at the diner as MC. He even gave a shout out to Canada...The total cost of this event is about 7 million, and Toyota is really behind this and future events....later, Jon.”

So there you have it folks … it sounds like Jon and his teammates could be on to something.  We will try and post results on the evening of Day One … so stay tuned to Big Fat Bass to hear the latest of Jon Bondy’s and Dave Mercer’s excellent adventures down in Texas at the Toyota Texas Bass Classic.
