2011 Casey Cup– Sunday June 26, 2011
2011 Casey Cup– Sunday June 26, 2011 in support of the Cancer Research Society
How it all started…in 2007 the COMPETITIVE SPORT FISHING LEAGUE announced the renaming of the Phenix Open to the Casey Cup:
In 2007 the CSFL renamed the Phenix Open as the Casey Cup in memory of Gerald “Casey” Creber. This event is dedicated to all the tournament anglers that have passed away and through the spirit of this event, the CSFL continues to honour these anglers.
Gerald “Casey” Creber (1938-2006), born in Orillia and raised in Cannington, enjoyed life to the fullest. Casey, a monument engraver by trade, was always a hard worker. At the age of 16, Casey started his live bait business. After putting in a full day, Casey managed to catch and deliver live bait to his customers. In 1963 Casey purchased the Port Bolster Inn, home to “Casey’s Huts”. His devotion to angling was apparent to both his family and his customers. In 1965 Casey became a Charter Captain on Lake Simcoe and in 1975 added Lake Ontario to his resume. In 1995, Casey added competitive fishing to his passion. With his wife Leona at his side, this was a team to be reckoned with. Among numerous titles accomplished, in particular the 2005 Canada/US Walleye Championship, Casey and Leona will always be remembered for the challenge they set forth at the 2005 Bassmania Balsam Lake Classic. We wish to dedicate this event to Casey Creber and all the anglers we have lost along to way in hopes of keeping their memory alive. This annual event is in memory of those anglers that lived their dream. Although they are no longer with us, their memories live on.
Please join us in this fundraising event held in memory of Casey Creber, Rick White, Bill Baker, Todd Grover, John McGuire, Gord Wilton, Kevin Jennings, Fred Pepper, Peter Janzen, Rick Amsbury, Bob Scott, Hank Gibson, Jonathan McConnell, Mike Seburn, Rob and Steve Lowe, Mike Dean, Roger Pardy , Mac Teegarden, Larry Bourgeois, John Vandervene, Gary Mills, Wes Sullivan, Cliff Lickers, Steve Perrault, Mike Maynard, Ken Thornhill and Blake Gilmore.
Pledge form/envelope will be made available upon request. Pledges can be made in a flat rate or per pound. The Cancer Research Society will provide a charitable tax receipt for every donation in excess of $10.00.
The 2007 Casey Cup brought over 300 anglers (156 teams) together from across Ontario. Each team was given an opportunity to compete for a $10,000.00 first place prize and a purse that exceeded $35,000. As anglers and organizers worked together in making the morning check in run smoothly, teams proceeded to the blast off area to commence the opening ceremonies which included the memoriam, music provided by the bag piper, a moment of silence, the National Anthem and the official blast off. As the first flight was sent out, anxious anglers awaited patiently to start the day of competition. The Casey Cup would not have been complete without 40 bags over 20lbs. This event was truly a reflection of Casey himself – with a large field, large payback, great fishing, great weather and a fantastic time, Casey Creber was most definitely among us.
This year’s Casey Cup will take place on Sunday June 26, 2011, out of Couchiching Park in Orillia. The memoriam will start at 6:30 am and the blast off will begin with the first heat at 7:00 am. Weigh in takes place at 3:00 pm. We invite all family and friends of the anglers in which this event is dedicated to.
