As Don’s unfortunate incident has reminded us no matter how well we try and protect our toys they can still end up stolen. We have had a few people call and email the store asking if we sell alarms or other theft prevention devices since Don put up his post the other day.

While we don’t sell alarms we do have the Garmin GTU10 a web based GPS tracking device that in the unlikely event your boat (or whatever else you attach it to) is stolen you can find out where it is. You are able to ping the device at your PC or with the Garmin Tracker App on your Android or Iphone. You are also able to set up a geo fence so if the device is taken outside of that area you can receive a text or email notification.

I checked out the videos. Nice device. I talked to my insurance company to see if they would give me a discount if I had a theft tracking device. They said "sorry" ha ha no. Was worth a shot. Regardless might help the cops in locating your property.

What are the tracking charges after the first year?

It is $49.95 US/year for the basic plan and I believe $4.99 more per month if you upgrade to the deluxe plan

i work in the insurance industry.

i insure construction companies.

many of our clients equipment have tracking devices.

they aren't worth their weight.

it is SO FREAKING EASY to get a scrambler causing the gps signals never reach their target after a theft. no gps system/company will provide any form of payment if they simply cannot "locate the signal".

lorenzo, that is why your company would not provide a discount.

you wouldn't believe how many items are stolen, with gps trackers, that the signals just magically stop sending.

Can this device be hidden somewhere on the boat? Just thinking that if the thief doesn't know the boat has a tracking device, he may not bother to try to scramble it?

Yes they can be easily hidden. The GTU10 is about 2 1/2 inches long and 1 1/2 wide. You can also hard wire this to the boats battery so it will last much, much longer than using its own internal battery.
